Building on the roadmap Mike has posted on his blog, I’d like to give a status update for the Camino manual as well as for the Camino Documentation team.
First off, the documentation team has come a long way. We have a new wiki setup and are slowly merging the changes from our current website into our new, Textpattern-based website. The visual change won’t be much, but it’ll be major improvement for the web developers and designers (here’s looking at you Jasper!).
That said, our focus is now changing. With the imminent arrival of 0.9 beta (in a week or two as Mike said) and the non-release of 0.9 final, Camino 1.0 is coming sooner than anyone had planned. It’s time to refocus our efforts.
The Camino Manual Project has been fairly stagnant since it was started. The finger-of-blame gets pointed right at myself as it’s a project I took on and have not managed to oversee with success. At this point, unless some amazing writer comes out of the woodwork and volunteers to create the entire thing, there is no way we will have a manual for 1.0. Let me emphasize that: There will be no manual for Camino 1.0.
I, personally, was hoping for a break between 0.9 and 1.0 to finish (begin?) the manual, but this is no longer the case. As such, it’s time to look forward and decide where to go from here.
Since there will be no manual, we need a place that users can go to for information on using Camino. I’m pretty sure this “internet” thing could solve our problems.
All Camino-docs work should go towards the website. It’s time to update and prepare for the 1.0. Most of the current documentation must be changed/rewritten. The Camino Documentation Team’s focus for the next few months will be the website and only the website. It will be our goal to produce the best website possible for 1.0.
